What is mental health Coaching?

Mental Health Coaches provide non-clinical, growth-oriented support that complements licensed mental health services.

COACHES ARE QUALIFIED TO:

~ Coach clients without a mental health diagnosis who want to improve their mental and emotional wellness, continue their healing journey, enhance their relationships or build confidence and resilience

~ Partner with clients who have one or more mental health diagnoses and want to work with a coach to supplement the clinical care* they are currently receiving or have previously received

~ Coach clients who need support as they navigate the mental health struggles of a partner, child, parent or other loved one

~ Assess mental health needs and refer clients to clinical care* when appropriate

COACHES ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO:

~ Diagnose mental and behavioral health disorders

~ Provide therapeutic interventions or treatments for mental health disorders or profound trauma

~ Act as a substitute for clinical mental health care*

*Clinical care may be provided by a psychologist, psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, licensed professional counselor, licensed therapist or clinical social worker.

What is the Role of a Christian Mental Health Coach?

  • Listen with empathy and patience and ask thoughtful, clarifying questions to help clients move toward transformation and freedom

  • Walk alongside clients recovering from trauma as they continue their journey of growth and healing

  • Support and encourage clients as they follow a mental health treatment plan developed for them by a licensed clinician

  • Help clients integrate Scripture with research-backed techniques to promote healthy beliefs and coping strategies

  • Provide encouragement and accountability to help clients reach their personal goals

  • Help clients learn to recognize, respond to and regulate their emotions and value them as God-given gifts

  • Coach clients on how to set and maintain relational boundaries to protect themselves and others

  • Teach clients about the brain and nervous system so they can see themselves as whole persons and embrace their embodiment as a gift from God

  • Equip clients with tools to improve their decision making skills and grow in confidence
